Tonight, Call the Midwife delivered a powerful episode that brought out emotion, tears, heartbreak, and maybe a few moments of happiness here and there. However, it also saw Sister Mary Cynthia depart right at a time when we were starting to see more of her recovery.

Hannah’s character started as midwife Cynthia Miller but became a nun. As Sister Mary Cynthia, she had a breakdown after a violent attack. Earlier this year it emerged that Ben Caplan, who plays policeman Peter Noakes, also quit.

Bryony was nominated for an Olivier Award for her theatre work. She played Sister Mary Cynthia in BBC One’s Call the Midwife, probably the role she is most famous for. The RADA-trained actress has appeared on TV, stage and film.
Bryony exited the show to concentrate on other work, and went on to focus on her theatre career. Her character went though all sorts of trauma. She was targeted by a serial attacker and knocked unconscious. She returned to her colleagues with a battered appearance and bite marks on her neck.
She left the BBC medical drama in 2017. Bryony Hannah joins the cast of Death in Paradise on Thursday (January 14 2021) as a suspect.
However, during the course of the show, Cynthia decided she was being called to a religious life, and became a nun. Her character lived as a nun at Nonnatus house, where she also worked as nurse. In June 2017, after five years on the BBC One show, Bryony announced she was leaving Call The Midwife.
Why did Sister Mary Cynthia never see her brother?
Sister Mary Cynthia says she never could, because for just a second, she could see her brother through strangers’ eyes. He died long before the start of the series.
In Series Six, Sister Mary Cynthia is sent to the Mother House to convalesce after her attack. However, Trixie stays at the Mother House for a night upon her return from South Africa and later tells the midwives that she did not see Sister Mary Cynthia there.

In the 2014 Christmas Special, Cynthia makes the decision to become a nun and goes off to the Mother House in Chichester as a postulant, despite Trixie ‘s uncertainty about the notion. She returns to Nonnatus House during the course of Series Four, now going by the religious name Sister Mary Cynthia.
To make matters worse, she says that she “never felt so close to God” as in the moments leading up to her attack. At first, Sister Mary Cynthia refuses to talk about the attack to the police, but soon, she comes forward, letting herself be processed as a victim and giving a description of her attacker.

Cynthia is already resident at Nonnatus House when Nurse Jennifer Lee arrives. Quiet and sensitive, and also in her twenties, Cynthia becomes Jenny’s confidante and life-long friend.

Who is leaving Victoria?
Emerald Fennell, who plays midwife Patsy Mount is leaving to play Lady Ada Lovelace in period drama Victoria. Kate Lamb who plays her gay lover Delia Busby is leaving too. And Bryony Hannah, who stars as nurse-turned-nun Sister Mary Cynthi, has also quit the series.
