Laurence Fishburne’s Dr. Ray Langston had a short but compelling run on CSI. And the reason he ultimately left the team is heartbreaking. Dr. Langston joined CSI well into its 15-year run. His first episode was a season 9 story called 19 Down.

At the end of the episode when a waitress was murdered, the husband who killed her tries to shoot Langston with a revolver but Langston soon fires one shot and the husband was killed. In Season Ten, the shooting review board cleared Langston, he got promoted to Level 2 and decided not to continue using a gun.
Dr. Raymond Langston is a fictional character on the CBS crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne. Why did Ray leave the lab?
In season 12, Ray has left the lab after being let off the hook by Internal Affairs, and moved back to Baltimore to be with Gloria. He was subsequently replaced by Morgan Brody, who he met while investigating his ex-wife’s husband’s death. The consequences of his actions caused Catherine and Nick to be demoted and D.B. Russell to be hired as the new Night Shift supervisor.
Eventually they do find out who Jekyll is and this leads up to a gun fight with Nick Stokes being shot in the arm. Thankfully Nick had enough energy to get up and shoot Jekyll before he shot Ray. Later on Ray goes back to Haskell and tells him that they are wrapping up the Jekyll Case, But just as Ray is about to leave he ends up being stabbed by Haskell and falling to the ground.
Ray soon gets a phone call from former serial killer Nate Haskell (who was seen in 19 Down) saying that he knows who Dr Jekyll is. They then ship Haskell over to the police station to get some answers. Eventually they do find out who Jekyll is and this leads up to a gun fight with Nick Stokes being shot in the arm.
Although he starts having a hallucination about Nate trying to kill him again, he does indeed survive but loses a kidney after his operation. When three explosives are detonated at a policeman’s funeral (who died in ” Meat Jekyll “), Ray still helps in the investigation while he is still in the hospital.
In All That Cremains, Gloria, who is revealed to be Ray’s ex-wife, comes to Vegas to inform Ray that she was getting married and that he should meet the fiance. They invite him to their wedding and he accepts and before leaving, Nick tells him to remove the wedding ring he still had on before going.
He later wrote a book on the case, Before My Eyes, which Grissom read and said he liked. The book has made him something of a celebrity in medical and criminological circles. Dr. Tom Loman (from CSI: Miami) also expressed a great deal of admiration for Langston for writing it. Serial killer Nate Haskell also read it and claimed not to have liked it.
What level is Langston on CSI?
By the Season 10 premiere episode, Langston has taken numerous courses (going so far as to max out the hours the lab will pay for and paying out of his own pocket) and has since been promoted to CSI Level 2 , as well as to being cleared of suspicion from the events of “All In”.
Langston was a professor of forensics and taught a class in college. Grissom comes to one of his classes, which is when Haskell is mentioned. After Langston became a CSI following Grissom’s retirement, Haskell emerges again when he calls Langston in the first part of the Season 10 finale “Doctor Who.”.

Later in the episode “Bump and Grind”, Langston receives a letter from Haskell, where he finds a kidney bean and note that says, “Just thinking about you, XO, Nate”. In the end of the episode, he looks at the scars that Haskell gave him and Sara Sidle walks in.
In the Season 9 episode “The Grave Shift “, Langston began his first day on the job. His first day was troubling for him, as he overdusted a print and ruined it, dropped a burned body and tore its shirt, got his necktie stuck in the victim’s blood (causing it to become evidence), and drew Riley Adams’s criticism when he reprimanded a man who struck his son. He also received a cold welcome from David Hodges, who was still unhappy about Gil Grissom’s departure, but who warms up to Langston after the latter demonstrates a cornmeal bomb. Nevertheless, the team accepts him as one of their own, inviting him to join them at a dinner. The episode ends with Langston staying late and practicing dusting with his own prints.
When Langston takes the stand, Haskell forces him to recount in full detail the attack at the crime lab. At first, it appears that the jury has been swayed by Haskell’s testimony; however, near the close of the case, Langston returns to the stand to rebuke Haskell’s MAO-A defense.
He tells her about the letter that Haskell sent him, and Sara tells him to not let Haskell get in his head. Later in the episode “Targets of Obsession “, Langston goes to court to testify against Haskell. During the trial, Haskell contends that he is a victim of his own circumstances.
Like Haskell, Langston reveals, he too was abused by an alcoholic father and has the MAO-A gene.
