He was kept captive by his kidnapper 38 miles away in Mendicino County, California, and Mariposa County, California until he was 14 years old when he managed to escape alongside Timothy White, another of Parnell’s captives.

Steven Stayner, a 7-year-old native of Merced, was kidnapped by Parnell on December 4, 1972, with the assistance of Edward Ervin Murphy, a coworker at the Yosemite Lodge, where Parnell worked as a night auditor. To Catheys Valley, Stayner was transported.
Stayner was informed by Parnell that his parents could no longer support him, that a judge had granted him legal possession of him, and that his new name was Dennis.
