Victoria Yang’s cousin Ash Tan spoke at her funeral on Wednesday in front of a sea of red serge about her lifelong dedication to assisting others.
He continued by saying that the qualities that defined everything she accomplished were her empathy, kindness, and her conviction that she could change the world.
Yang, a 31-year-old outreach worker for mental health and the homeless, was brutally killed on October 18 after assisting a City of Burnaby official serve an eviction notice on a man who had been camped out in a nearby park.
Tens of thousands of RCMP and other uniformed police officers gathered at the Richmond Olympic Oval to pay their respects and wish the slain officer farewell.
Tan delivered a eulogy on behalf of Yang’s relatives. The man said, “I hope that what made her so special will become the standard and that bravery will be associated with humanity.” From Shaelyn Yang, we can all learn that there shouldn’t be a separation between the two. Yang received praise from Commissioner Brenda Lucki for her perseverance, hard work, and devotion.
