Tyler Sheahan, a Bard senior who had struggled with anxiety and depression, ended his life early Saturday morning, and his body was found at the Red Hook Rec Park, according to Bard College and others close to the situation. Sheahan was also a graduate of Red Hook High School.
Bard President Leon Botstein, who announced the death Saturday evening in an email to Bard students, faculty and staff, said that Sheahan loved animals and aspired to become a veterinarian. He had volunteered at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital and was on track to earn a degree in biology in fall 2024.
“Yet Tyler could not overcome his depression,” Botstein wrote. “I have been in touch with the family who are our neighbors here in Red Hook. They have asked me to tell you that Tyler took his own life.”
Sheahan, Botstein noted, struggled with anxiety and was getting help as he lived at home and was “cared for by his loving parents.”
Tyler’s father, Jim Sheahan, is the social media manager for the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard and his younger brother, Tucker, was a student at Bard, Botstein said. Tyler’s mother is Kelly Sheahan, who was listed as a middle-school math teacher in Wappingers Falls several years ago.
“I assured them that the entire community extends to each of them not only whatever support we can offer, but deep sympathy and affection as they struggle with this tragedy,” Botstein wrote.
“Nothing is so devastating to a family as the death of a child,” Botstein said in closing his note. “Our hearts go out to the Sheahans. We will do our very best to honor Tyler’s memory.”
Botstein said that the Student Services team at Bard is hosting drop-in hours in the Yellow Room at the Campus Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
