The story goes that McGraw’s father and mother, who were never married, only had intimate relations once, which led to her pregnancy. Because of this, her parents sent her away from their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida to Delhi, Louisiana to live there with relatives.
In his developmental years, McGraw played a number of sports, especially baseball. After high school, he enrolled at Northeast Louisiana University for a baseball scholarship. However, he injured his knee, which prevented him from pursuing a professional career. This prompts him to drop out of school to pursue a musical career as he learned to play the guitar and occasionally sings for money.
In 1990, Tim McGraw recorded a demo tape and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in order to land a recording contract. His music was then heard by music executives at Curb Records, who signed him to a contract, the rest becoming history.

Tim McGraw grew up not knowing who his real father was, as he taught, he was his mother’s husband at the time. Around the age of 11, he discovered the truth, leaving no possibility for his mother to introduce him to his father. Tug reportedly denied being the father for about nine years, however, before accepting and forming a close relationship with his son.
After retiring from baseball, Tug continued to work as a sportscaster and reporter for a Philadelphia television station. In 2003, while working as a coach for the Phillies, he was hospitalized with a brain tumor. An operation which, at the time, had been deemed effective, had been performed to remove the tumour. After doctors gave him the green light to live a long life, it was discovered that the tumor was not completely excised by surgery, causing the malignant form to return inoperably.
