It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Samuel Terblanche, affectionately known as Samuel Sam , a bright and promising Columbia University student hailing from New York. Sam’s untimely departure on Thursday, September 21, 2023, has left family, friends, and the entire Columbia College community in deep shock and disbelief. His passing was confirmed through a statement by Columbia College Dean Josef Sorett, which read, “Samuel Terblanche, a Columbia College junior, has died after a recent illness.”
Sam’s educational journey was marked by a diverse and enriching background. Although born in New York City, he spent his formative years in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Samuel attended the American Community School of Abu Dhabi and pursued the International Baccalaureate program from August 2019 to May 2021. His dedication to education eventually led him back to New York City, where he enrolled as a student at Columbia University. At the time of his passing, he was in his junior year, focusing on economics and environmentally responsible development.
Sam’s roots traced back to South Africa, a testament to his international perspective. His experiences and expertise in diverse countries made him an ideal candidate for an international internship with Citizens’ Climate International (CCI) during the summer. At CCI, he worked closely with Cathy Orlando, contributing to international leadership meetings, researching policy perspectives such as carbon dividends, and actively participating in lobbying efforts for CCL Canada.
Throughout his life, Sam demonstrated an unwavering commitment to climate advocacy. He aimed not only to deepen his understanding of the climate crisis and its global implications but also to equip himself with the necessary tools to effect meaningful change. Sam’s dedication to raising awareness about climate issues was evident even during his time at an international school in Abu Dhabi, where he collaborated with elementary and middle schools across the Middle East to educate students about the climate crisis.
