An argument turned violent Saturday night when a man shot and killed a woman before turning the gun on himself, Big Rapids police said.
The woman killed was identified by police as 33-year-old Samantha Houghton of Big Rapids. The alleged shooter was identified as 35-year-old Matthew Ottobre.
Police responded to an 11:15 p.m. report of shots fired on Saturday, July 22, at a home in the 1100 block of Catherine Street.
Upon arrival, police found a Houghton dead inside the residence. Officers also found several children – police didn’t say how many – in the residence that were not harmed.
Ottobre was found dead by police during a search of the home’s exterior.
Police said Houghton and Ottobre lived together and had children in common. Police said the two got into an argument, which resulted in Ottobre shooting Houghton and then himself.
The children were not harmed and released to the custody of family.
