Otis Ray Redding Jr. was a singer and composer from the United States. Redding came to Macon at the age of two after being born in Dawson, Georgia. Redding dropped out of school at the age of 15 to work with Little Richard’s backing band, the Upsetters, and participate in talent showcases at Macon’s famed Douglass Theatre.
Redding began playing the piano and guitar at a young age, and participated in the choir at Vineville Baptist Church. Redding began learning the drums and singing at the age of 10. He performed in the school band at Ballard-Hudson High School. Redding performed gospel music for Macon radio station WIBB every Sunday, earning him $6, and for 15 weeks in a row, he took home the $5 cash prize from a competition for teenagers.
