Vanessa Kaimimoku died this week in Downey while trying to rescue her 12-year-old daughter from their burning apartment.
As investigators work to determine what caused the fire, the family is left reeling and trying to find a way to move forward. Investigators determined that both Vanessa Kaimimoku, the mother, and Kayla Kaimimoku Diaz, her 12-year-old daughter, were in the second floor apartment when the fire broke out. ABC 7 reports that Kayla died the following day after her mother was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Baranowski, police had not yet determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
