Obituary: Former Hockey Coach Brad Tippett Passes Away

Brad Tippett, the former coach of the Regina Pats and beloved member of the Peninsula Panthers in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, has passed away at the age of 64. His contributions to the hockey community are celebrated, and he will be dearly missed. The Peninsula Panthers mourn the loss of a remarkable coach and leader.

Brad Tippett dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring young hockey players. He served as the head coach for the Peninsula Panthers in Sidney, B.C., for six seasons. His commitment and talent were recognized when he was named the league’s coach-of-the-year in 2021-22. Unfortunately, he had to take a leave for medical reasons. While we remember and honor his coaching achievements, the specific cause of his passing has not been disclosed.

Brad Tippett’s love for the game began in Regina, where he was born in 1959. His family later moved to Prince Albert in 1972. He pursued a career in hockey, playing junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders. His skills led him to the University of Michigan on a scholarship, and he also spent time in the minor leagues. Following his playing days, he returned to the Raiders, serving as an assistant coach/manager. Brad Tippett further contributed to the sport by coaching Prince Albert’s under-16 squad in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League before joining the Regina Pats.

In recognition of his lasting impact on Prince Albert’s hockey community, Brad Tippett was inducted into the Prince Albert Hall of Fame in 1998. Notably, he is the older brother of Dave Tippett, a renowned NHL coach.

During his tenure as head coach of the Regina Pats, which began before the 1989-90 Western Hockey League season, Brad Tippett amassed a record of 102 wins, 103 losses, and 25 ties in three-plus seasons. The Pats experienced success as East Division semi-finalists in his first two seasons. However, challenges arose, and the team faced adversity in the 1991-92 season. Brad Tippett’s coaching journey with the Pats concluded on November 18, 1992, when Bill Hicke, a co-owner and the team’s general manager, took over the coaching responsibilities. The hockey world bids a fond farewell to Brad Tippett, a coach who left an indelible mark on the sport and the lives of young athletes. His legacy of dedication, leadership, and passion for hockey will be remembered and cherished.
