After the ambulance he was operating crashed in Pittsburgh on Sunday night, a Penn Hills paramedic died.
Just after 11 p.m., emergency personnel were called to Fifth Avenue and Morewood Avenue in Shadyside.
When Pittsburgh emergency personnel arrived, they discovered 23-year-old Nick Theofilis in cardiac arrest.
Theofilis’ condition was life-threatening, so he was taken to the hospital. According to a statement from Penn Hills officials, he passed away as a result of his wounds.
A man who was a passenger in the ambulance sustained head injuries, face abrasions, and perhaps a concussion. He was transported to a hospital in good health.

Emergency services were summoned to Fifth Avenue and Morewood Avenue in Shadyside just after midnight.
When emergency responders from Pittsburgh came, they found Nick Theofilis, 23, in cardiac arrest.
Theofilis was rushed to the hospital since his condition was critical. He died from his wounds, according to a statement from Penn Hills officials.
Injuries to the head, abrasions to the face, and maybe a concussion were received by a guy who was a passenger in the ambulance. He was in good health when he was taken to the hospital.
“This hit home for me as the chief of Pittsburgh EMS. We are all affected when one of our emergency medical services colleagues passes away. This is a very real concern for the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS. Every day brings a new reminder of how fleeting life is, and this tragedy is no different. As the department mourns one of its own, we stand alongside Penn Hills EMS and extend our sincere condolences and unwavering support,” stated Pittsburgh EMS Chief Ronald Romano.
The driver of a different vehicle was also sent to a hospital in stable condition while experiencing stomach pain.
According to the police, the ambulance was empty when the collision occurred.
Theofilis was widely known, the Penn Hills EMS supervisor reported Channel 11. She claimed that he was an Eagle Scout, a volunteer firefighter, and a paramedic for Penn Hills and White Oak. She claimed he was committed to helping his neighborhood.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the initial collision resulted in a third vehicle being struck.
Police in Pittsburgh are looking into it.
