Naomi Judd, the matriarch of the country music duo The Judds for nearly four decades, has died at the age of 76, according to her daughters Wynonna Judd and Ashley Judd in a statement released Saturday.
After reaching the pinnacle of country music, they called it quits in 1991 after Naomi Judd was diagnosed with hepatitis C. Wynonna’s solo career continued.
Naomi, who was born Diana Ellen Judd in Ashland, Kentucky, was a single mother and nurse in Nashville when she and Wynonna began singing professionally together.
Their distinct harmonies, combined with acoustic, bluegrass, and blues elements, made them stand out in the genre at the time.
Between 1984 and 1991, the Judds released six studio albums and an EP, winning nine Country Music Association Awards and seven Academy of Country Music Awards.
