OBITUARY OF JOSEPH BLANCHARD

South Carolina’s Charleston – Joseph Rozier Blanchard died Thursday, July 14, 2022, in his home in Charleston, South Carolina, surrounded by loved ones.

Joe grew up in Tampa, Florida with his three siblings after being born on January 6, 1962 in Winter Park, Florida parents George Robert Blanchard and Judith Katherine Rozier.

Joe spent his childhood working at his grandfather’s machinery company, the Joseph L. Rozier Machinery Co., where he fell in love with the industry that would become his life’s work.

Joe Blanchard has been an essential contribution to South Carolina since coming there in 1987. Joe has been a great corporate leader since becoming President of Blanchard Machinery Company in 1996.

Joe Blanchard, President of Blanchard Machinery Company since 1996, not only built the dealership to more than 700 employees across 12 branches statewide, but he also left a lasting impression on South Carolina businesses and communities.

Joe received the 2014 Medallion Award from Columbia College, where he served as Chairman of the Board.

Joe was honored into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 2015 for his numerous accomplishments.

The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce recognized Joe Business Leader of the Year in 2019. Joe was named the University of South Carolina’s President in 2021.

Joe was granted an Honorary Life Member of the University of South Carolina in 2021 for his contributions to the university and the community.

Joe worked on various boards and committees in addition to his many accomplishments. Joe was a board member for Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, and the Columbia Museum of Art, where he had served as Chairman of the Board, at the time of his death. Joe was also the current Chairman of the South Carolina Mining Council’s Board of Directors.

Joe and his wife Melissa were passionate arts supporters and philanthropists in the state.

The Blanchards supported numerous art shows that brought thousands of people to the Columbia Museum of Art. In addition, the Blanchards collaborated with Habitat for Humanity, The Riverbanks Society, and Harvest Hope.

Joe Blanchard was an extremely talented man who loved the state of South Carolina and was privileged to call it home for 35 years. Before his death, Governor Henry McMaster bestowed upon him the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in the state. His impact on the state and influence will be felt for the rest of his life.

His family is his greatest legacy, despite all of his triumphs and achievements. Joe’s house was the scene of numerous crimes.

Joe’s house was the setting for innumerable dinners with friends and family, where he was known to pour the greatest wine and frequently laugh. Joe’s father Bob, mother Judy, and stepmother Sharon all died before him. Joe was Melissa’s devoted husband, the father of Rozier (Carrie), Boyd (Emilie), and Katherine (Davis), and the grandfather to Harper, Bo, Henry, and Joe III. His beloved family includes his sister Elizabeth Blanchard, brothers Bob Jr. (Linda) and Bill Blanchard, stepbrother Bartley Rice (Charity), and 16 nieces and nephews.
