The person murdered in the line of duty while putting out a house fire has been identified as Lieutenant Jeffrey Norman, a 20-year member of the Memphis Fire Department.
At Regional One, three other fighters who were trapped in the burning house with Norman are currently receiving medical attention for injuries.
Crews worked to save the four throughout the incident, according to fire officials.
Just after 11:30 p.m. on July 18, according to the Memphis Fire Department (MFD), firefighters were sent to the 2000 block of Rile Street, close to I-55 and W. Mallory Avenue, for a fire.
In a statement, MFD stated:
We send our sympathies and our sincere thoughts to the family, friends, and other Memphis firefighters. We kindly seek for prayers and consolation at this trying time.
We humbly ask that the public and media respect the impacted families’ right to privacy as they mourn this terrible loss and our firefighting staff.
Reps for the Memphis Fire Union also issued the following statement:
Our hearts are broken to learn that one of our #BluffCityBravest perished while putting out a house fire in South Memphis.
I pray for comfort for his family at this difficult time, both at home and at the fire station. We still pray for the three other firefighters who were hurt in the same incident and are being treated in the hospital. IAFFF and Memphis

Chief of Memphis Fire Gina Sweat said in a statement:
