Leonie Forbes, an iconic figure in Jamaican theater and radio, has passed away.85 years old.Forbes was raised in Kingston as an only child. He was born there on June 14, 1937.She reportedly attended St. George’s Preparatory, Merrywood Elementary School, Mico Practising School, Kingston Senior School, Excelsior College, and Durham College, according to the National Library of Jamaica.After graduating from high school, she first worked as a typist for Sir Philip Sherlock before moving on to playwright Barry Reckord.In 1955, Forbes joined the now-defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation as an announcer, becoming one of the first voices on the radio (JBC).She pursued a certificate program in Radio Television and Stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England for six years when she was a student there.Additionally, Forbes wrote screenplays for the Caribbean service of the British Broadcasting Corporation.In addition to acting in plays including “Sea Mama,” “The Rope and the Cross,” and “Old Story Time,” Forbes has played the major roles in twelve pantomimes.Additionally, she has acted in movies including “Children of Babylon,” “Club Paradise,” and “Milk and Honey.”The Re-Entry into Sound, written by Forbes and Alma Mock Yen, is a textbook commonly used to instruct broadcasters in the Caribbean.Four children were born to Forbes.Awards include the Centenary Medal, Silver Musgrave Medal, and Government of Jamaica Order of Distinction (Officer Class) (1980).Thanks for reading from Ghsplash a news publishing website from Ghana.
