Dr. Jason Michael McGlothlin, 50, of Rootstown, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 22, 2023. Born on January 17, 1973, in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. McGlothlin was a devoted husband, father, friend, counselor, and professor who was truly selfless.
He cherished life with his wife and soulmate, Deborah G. (Fisher) McGlothlin, his children Matthew J. McGlothlin, David J. Rimar (Hannah Dezort), Dominique G. Rimar (Cristian Bailey), his mother-in-law Roberta A. Holler, his brother-in-law Joseph D. (Diana) Fisher, nieces and nephews; Vincent, Dominic, Nicole, Anthony, and Angela Fisher, numerous close friends and family members, and canine companion, Finn.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, Ludwig (Frank) and Virginia Hesse, his mother Elizabeth Anne Hesse, his Uncle Thomas Hesse, and his therapy dog, Cledis, known as “Hippo.” He was a member of the Friendship Bible Church in Randolph, Ohio. Dr. Jason McGlothlin was employed at Kent State University as a tenured associate professor of counselor education and supervision. His empathy towards students was highly regarded within the community and by his closest colleague, Dr. Marty Jencius.
Dr. McGlothlin’s research and scholarship centered on suicide assessment, prevention, and treatment, providing consultation to various organizations and schools nationwide.
He provided consultation in hostage negotiation to police departments and actively provided support services to the May 4th Visitors Center and veterans of the May 4th event.
He also assisted the Red Cross as a First Responder in nationwide traumatic events such as 9/11, Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Chardon.
Dr. McGlothlin was warm and compassionate, always willing to lend an ear and help. His calm presence, generosity, and kindness will be greatly missed.
