Craig “Screamer” Powell was born on June 11, 1963, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in a musical family.
He began playing the guitar at a young age and was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, and Carlos Santana. Powell started his musical journey in 1979 and toured throughout the United States and Tokyo, Japan, throughout his career.
In the 1980s, Powell became the lead guitarist for the band Mazarati and recorded with them from 1985 to 1986 and Mazarati 2 from 1986 to 1989. He was also a studio musician for several artists, including Prince, New Addition, Sheila E, Alexander O’Neil, and Nick St. Nicolas of Steppen Wolf. He worked as a producer and composer for various musicians and producers during his career.
In 2012, Screamer formed his own musical group and created the album WAR. He had also played with other regional bands like Westside, Smart Mouth, and Mazarati Revisited.
He started the band Wayo Dayo with Aaron Paul Keith, Mazarati’s keyboardist, in 2006. He was a robust, energetic man before his sickness, but his health deteriorated significantly after his diagnosis in 2021.

Craig Powell passed away from Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis on April 12, 2023, at the age of 59. He had been diagnosed with the condition in 2021 and had experienced severe complications. Screamer was fed through a TPN IV because he was no longer able to eat by mouth. He also used biological fluids and used drains and bags.
His health condition had negatively impacted his eyesight, leading to several hospitalizations and discharges.
His cousin DeMonica Flye confirmed the news of his passing by releasing a statement on social media. She wrote, “It’s true my Cousin Craig Powell “Screamer,” was called home. Im so thankful that I was able to see him $ be with him the past couple days.”
