Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to Bill Reichert. We all mourn his demise very deeply. During this time of sorrow, may his family and friends feel the comfort of our thoughts and prayers.

Bill Reichert Biography

Bill Reichert was born in Owosso, Michigan to a father who worked on tiny engines. When he was a kid, he and his brother Jim would get their dad to help them build rudimentary go-karts powered by lawnmower motors so they could race around the neighborhood. Bill’s father decided to get the boys into genuine racing when they learned to boost the performance of their karts to the point where they tore up dad’s front lawn.

When Bill was 12 years old, he and his brother started getting real racing experience at the local kart track. Bill raced his kart every Friday night for four years, amassing a collection of trophies that filled an entire room. Bill Reichert’s father was not a racer, but he was the one who set him on the path to racing greatness.

When he was 16 years old, Bill drove his 1964 Pontiac GTO streetcar to the local dragstrip to compete in the C/Modified Production class. Bill’s aim of long-term drag racing greatness evolved from competing for pride and bringing home many trophies.
Bill kept racing all through the ’70s, beginning with his GTO and progressing through a 1965 Chevelle SS and a 1969 Camaro. It was official: Bill Reichert drove racecars. Bill, though, was a married guy with two kids, so he had other things on his mind besides speed and distance.

After learning the ropes in a local machine shop for a few years, Bill Reichert, inspired by his father’s success in the engine repair industry, set up shop in 1984. As a result, Reichert Racing Engines was established and quickly became successful. Bill’s only real complaint about the company is that it has cut into his time at the races. In 1990, Bill and his son Andy, who also doubled as crew chief, incorporated their business and expanded to four full-time employees.
After Bill had established a solid foundation for his business, he began fantasizing about making a serious comeback to drag racing with a Federal-Mogul Dragster. Bill Reichert, the racer, was about to take the next big step in his development.

Reichert

In Reichert’s first year behind the wheel of an alcohol-fueled dragster (1992), he posted a rookie season that would have been the envy of any competitor. In the spring, after obtaining his alcohol dragster license, Bill competed in 14 races. Bill had one victory, two second-place results, one appearance in the semi-finals, and six other appearances in the quarter-finals in 1992, good for a total of 20th place in the national point standings. The Reicherts did not appear to be amateurs in this powerful division of racing.

Bill continued his success from 1992 into 1993, winning his first NHRA National Event Championship round and finishing in 12th position in the final rankings. His first NHRA Division 3 Alcohol Dragster Championship and a fine seventh place result in the national standings came in 1994, and he added four WDRC victories to that. Bill’s first NHRA National Event victory and three consecutive top-ten finishes all came in 1995, a banner year in which he also won three NHRA Western Division Racing Championships. In 1998, he finished in the top five nationally for the fifth year in a row and won his second NHRA Division 3 title. In the elite world of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, finishing in the top ten of the national point standings five times in a row is a remarkable feat. Bar’s Leak has been his sponsor for the previous seven years, which is very noteworthy.

For Bill Reichert, what does the future hold? As Reichert puts it, I strive to excel in anything I do. We plan on remaining here as we strive to become Federal-Mogul Class Champions. In my opinion, the Federal-Mogul Series has shown to be a successful model for advertising that can effectively reach tens of millions of people. I’m committed to doing our best because I genuinely enjoy our work. Now that we’ve “paid our dues” for a while, I believe we can really contend for a World Championship.
